Ray Harroun (1879–1968) was an American race-car driver and engineer who became famous for winning the first Indianapolis 500 in 1911 in the Marmon Wasp. He designed the innovative single-seat Wasp and used a rearview mirror instead of a riding mechanic, an idea believed to be the first use of a rearview mirror on an automobile. After retiring from racing, Harroun continued working as an automotive engineer and designer until his death in 1968.
