Honorees Biography Summary
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway was founded in 1909 by Carl G. Fisher, James A. Allison, Arthur C. Newby, and Frank H. Wheeler. Their goal was to create a permanent automobile testing and racing facility where car manufacturers could improve their vehicles. The speedway opened in 1909 and became famous for hosting the Indianapolis 500, first held in 1911.
