Auto Race Car Driver. Born in Oakford, Illinois, he began his racing career as a mechanic and the first car he built with his father won the Indianapolis 500 in 1930. Going on to be a top contending driver, he competed in five Indianapolis 500 races in (1937, 39, 40) and in 1941, was co-winner of the Indianapolis 500, driving the first 72 laps of the race sharing the win with Mauri Rose who completed the race in the lead.
